Yamato type dryer supported the Tomioka Silk Mill, a World Heritage Site. The Tomioka Silk Mill was at the forefront of industrial development in Japan during the Meiji era, and it was designated a World Heritage Site on June 25, 2014. Yamato Sanko's Yamato type dryer was one of the technologies used at the Tomioka Silk Mill. At the start of the Meiji era, silk was Japan's most important export for earning foreign currency. In order to maintain the quality of silk even when mass produced, the Meiji government established the state-owned Tomioka Silk Mill equipped with French type silk reeling machines to improve quality and provide training for technical instructors. The raw material of silk is the cocoon produced by the silkworm larva when it pupates. The silkworm is a living creature and it will break the cocoon and emerge as a moth after about 10 days. When it does so, the thread is broken and can no longer be used as a raw material for silk. In order to kill the pupa in the fresh cocoon and prevent mold from forming on the cocoon, drying for a period of time is required without damaging the cocoon layer that will become the thread. The cocoons cultivated by farmers have a predetermined harvesting time, with several thousand kilos collected at once by farmers. Even though they knew the cocoons needed to be dried to a certain moisture level, there was no drying machine that could do this at the beginning of the Meiji era.Yamato Sanko's founder and his colleagues focused on addressing this need, and through their dedication and technical skill, created the cocoon dryer. We are proud that our machines helped fill the brick warehouse that is a symbol of the Tomioka Silk Mill.(7 Yamato Sanko machines were used: 4 steam heat type cocoon dryers, 2 hot air type cocoon dryers, and 1 shelf insertion type by-product dryer.)Our cocoon dryers becoming a part of a World Heritage Site sends a message to each employee of Yamato Sanko, encouraging them to inherit the inspiring traditions of our predecessors and continue to produce dryers that will help people throughout society.
